Sometimes inspiration can be found in the oddest places. For Jacksonville Beach resident Matt Lennon, he found his inspiration at the annual "Plaid Party."
The Plaid Party prides itself on being known for "plaid debauchery," but is also a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). CF is a life threatening disorder that causes mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other areas of the body.
Lennon took the concept of the Plaid Party, ran with it and decided to host a fundraiser for Sunny Shores Seacamp with a similar, over-the-top theme coinciding with the Kentucky Derby.
Sunny Shores is a free camp to people with CF of all ages to attend for five days at the Disney Vero Beach Resort in Vero Beach Florida.
Lennon's 10-year-old daughter Jaelyn has CF and has attended the camp every summer. "I wanted to find a way to do something for the camp," said Lennon, "I know I can throw a good party and raise money for a good cause."
Through friends, co-workers and word of mouth in the community, Lennon was able to secure raffle items including gift cards to Roy’s and Bonefish Grill, tickets to TPC, artwork by local artists and more.
Lennon has so far raised close to $1,000 and hopes the event grows in the future. “My goal is for this to become bigger than my garage, for it to move to a bar or other venue that can really help make a difference.”
