Coast Guard searching for fisherman who fell overboard

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- The United States Coast Guard is searching for a man who fell overboard from a commercial fishing vessel Thursday evening.

Peter Steewell, 55, from Pompano Beach was sword fishing 400 miles off of the coast of St. Augustine on the Fine Tuna, a 57-foot vessel from Wanchese, N.C., according to a release from the USCG.

Steewell was not wearing a life jacket when he fell overboard. He was wearing rubber boots, a T-shirt and sweatpants.

The search began at 5 p.m. Thursday and several resources were devoted to the search. Air crews from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., Air Station Clearwater, Fla., searched throughout the night.

NOCC Atlantic also joined the search Thursday night. It was headed for Spain but diverted from its path. It was located by using the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System.

Coast Guard Cutter Dependable will join the search on Saturday morning, diverting from its current nearby mission, the release said.
