Mayport ferry: 2 issues could snag transfer Sunday | News

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Just days ahead of the transfer of the St. Johns River Ferry, there are still two hang-ups that need to be resolved.

The ownership will go from the Jacksonville Port Authority to the St. Johns River Ferry Commission, which was put together by the Jacksonville City Council to operate the ferry.

JAXPORT says it will contribute $200,000 and the City of Jacksonville will also chip in some money to run the ferry for a year starting October 1.

Now even though that transfer ceremony is set to happen Sunday night, there are still two unresolved issues. City Councilman John Crescimbeni, who is also the chair of the St. Johns River Ferry Commission, says the issues are with the insurance and the slip walls.

He says the boat and the equipment on land are covered by insurance, but the piece of metal that cars drive over to get on the boat needs to be added to the insurance.  Councilman Crescimbeni also says the slip walls are deteriorating and need some work.

On Good Morning Jacksonville, Crescimbeni says he believes the issues will be resolved before Sunday and the keys will be handed over at 8:45 p.m. Sunday.
