First Coast business to outfit Team USA | News
PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- A Ponte Vedra Beach-based business called Survival Straps has been approved to outfit Team USA in the London Summer Olympics.
Founder and CEO Kurt Walchle is pretty excited about it.
"It's amazing, just absolutely amazing," he said.
His company makes bracelets, necklaces, key chains and other gear out of military issue paracord.
"Yes you wear it and it's fashionable, but in an emergency situation, you can actually unravel the product and get out of a jam," he said.
He started the business with his wife six years ago.
"Yeah it was just the two of us doing it as an at home business."
Now they have 50 employees. All manufacturing is done in their Ponte Vedra office space.
And when the opportunity came up to start licensing with professional sports operations, Kurt jumped at it. Now they supply the PGA TOUR.
So it only makes sense now to go after the largest sporting event on the planet.
"A few months ago we said, 'Ya know what, the Olympics are coming up,' and we took a shot at it."
They shot and scored.
"The U.S. Olympic committee loved what we were about, that we're made in the U.S.A and they said yes," Kurt said.
They'll be supplying bag tags, bracelets, necklaces, key chains, credential clips and many other products for the Team U.S.A. athletes.
