JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- A 24-year-old Wisconsin man was hit and killed by a driver while walking on a sidewalk with friends.

"It just sucks that we didn't even get a chance to say goodbye, we were supposed to do that this morning but that got taken away," said Leila Burton.

Mike Gunderson, 24, has never seen the ocean, so he and his friends drove down to Jacksonville for vacation.

His friends say they enjoyed every minute of their seven day trip. Investigators say early Sunday morning, Gunderson was leaving a bar with friends when the driver of an SUV jumped the curb, drove onto the sidewalk and killed Gunderson.

"He was where he was supposed to be, there is no reason that it ended the way it ended," said Emily Burton.

"I ran around to the front end of the car and this lady gets out and she instantly tries to pull him out and as she was doing that I knew Mike was not going to live," said Jeremy Anderson.

Investigators say the driver stayed at the scene after the accident but has not been charged yet.

For Mike's friends, they are heartbroken, but happy that he spent his last seven days with the people he loved.

"We went to St. Augustine yesterday and Mike bought this shirt and ironically it says 'End of the road, St. Augustine' with a skeleton driving a motorcycle. Its just ironic, I am going to frame it and never forget him," said Alec Gardner.
