Woman wants 1 mile of Jax Beach to be nude friendly

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- A petition that recently hit Change.org aims to turn a one mile stretch of Jacksonville Beach into a place free of tan lines.

In the online petition aimed at Jacksonville Beach Mayor Charlie Latham, Jacksonville resident Angela Anderson asks that a section of Jax Beach be "clothing optional".

In the petition Anderson writes: Just as we have given way to respect other's cultures and our environment, we must allow others to practice their beliefs.

"It's not happening on my watch," Mayor Latham told our news partner The Florida Times-Union.

"It's not anything to be ashamed of," Anderson told First Coast News. "People are very ashamed of their bodies and we'd like to break out of that." So far, she says, response has been mixed. "No one has gone so far as to say it's disgusting, but people are like 'It's a family place.'"

Anderson says being a naturalist is a recreational activity, like many others at the beach, and its goal is human expression, not sexual expression. But not everyone likes the idea.
Beaches resident Harold Harger thinks clothes should be mandatory.

"I was born in the world with no clothes, but I think they need clothes on at the beach. Everybody's scantily clad as it is. If want to go to nude beaches go to France, but I just think everybody ought to keep their clothes on," Harger said.

Some younger beachgoers expressed interest in the proposal. Micki Snodgrass said she'd consider going and would support the idea, as long as it was clearly marked.

"I think that would be fine as long as everyone's clearly aware of it," Snodgrass said.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the petition had just over 200 digital signatures.

"I am asking that the city of Jacksonville allow all people to practice our personal freedom and designate one mile of Jacksonville Beach as clothing optional. If you agree, please sign your name and spread the word," Anderson wrote in the petition.

Latham to the Times Union he wants the beach to be as family friendly as possible.

Nude beaches in Florida are not completely uncommon. Florida's Nude & Clothing-Optional Guide has a few options.
