8 injured in balcony collapse in Neptune Beach

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. -- Eight people suffered minor injuries after a balcony collapsed Thursday afternoon at a second story residence.

According to Neptune Beach Police Chief David Sembach, four people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries and four others were advised to go to the hospital and seek treatment.

Twenty-five Neptune Beach police officers responded to the home at 1st and Margaret streets. Sembach said the Jacksonville Beach Police Department sent a few units as well to help block off the streets in the area.

Anywhere from 20 to 50 people may have been on the balcony at the time, Sembach said, but they don't know for sure because many people left the scene before police arrived.

Morgan Kristensen, who told First Coast News he fell off the balcony, said there were 10 to 15 people on the balcony and no one was jumping on it at the time of the collapse.

Kristensen said the balcony started swinging from the left side and swept around. He said one of his good friends had her foot crushed in the collapse.

Sembach said police are trying to get a building inspector from Jacksonville or Atlantic Beach to come to the scene, as the Neptune Beach building inspector is out of town.
