Adventure Landing Hosting a “Be Water Aware” Water Safety Day

Adventure Landing’s Shipwreck Island Waterpark is on a mission to make Northeast Florida “water-aware.”  May has been designated National Water Safety Month by the World Waterpark Association, the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals and the National Recreation & Parks Association.  As a WWA member, Adventure Landing is taking action to educate the public on how to prevent drownings, recreational water-related injuries and sun damage by offering educational information to the media during National Water Safety Month.

The Seventeenth Annual “KID’S FISHING RODEO”

The seventeenth annual “Get Hooked on Fishing NOT Drugs, Kid’s Fishing Rodeo” will be hosted by the Jacksonville Beach Police Department on Saturday, May 7, 2011.   
The event will be held at Hugenot Park in Jacksonville Beach at the Lagoon.  The park is located behind the tennis center at the corner of 3rd Street, South (A1A) and 16th Avenue, South.  The fun begins at 9:00 am and continues until 1:00 pm, rain or shine.  This event is free to all children.  There will be pony rides, a petting zoo, children’s finger printing, SWAT demonstrations, “DUNK the Cop”, and fishing for kids – ages 15 and under.  

Protect Pets From Heat Stress and Stroke

Like humans, pets are susceptible to overheating. Older dogs, flat-faced dogs, overweight dogs and puppies have the highest risk of heat stroke or heat stress, but owners should make sure that all pets have plenty of cool water and a source of continuous shade when outdoors as temperatures rise across Jacksonville.

Youth Win Immunization PSA Contest

Each year in the United States, we lose 1,070 people to meningitis and 4,590 people to cervical cancer caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). In an effort to spread the word about these vaccine-preventable diseases and raise awareness among teens, Brunet-García Advertising sponsored the Florida Bureau of Immunization’s You Call the Shots public service announcement (PSA) contest; inviting youth ages 11 to 18 to produce and enter a 30-second  PSA highlighting the importance of HPV and meningitis vaccinations.

Bestselling Children’s Author Laura Duksta at The BookMark, May 5th

Bestselling children’s author Laura Duksta will be at The BookMark on Thursday, May 5 at 7 pm with her new book “You are a Gift to the World.”  Like her previous book “I Love You More”, this is a “flip book” format, meaning it starts from either side and can be read to the middle and then flipped for another complete story.   

Jacksonville VisionWalk, May 21st

VisionWalk is the national signature fundraising event of the Foundation Fighting Blindness.  Since its inception in the Spring of 2006, the program has raised over $15 million to fund sight-saving research.  As promising treatments move into critical human studies, the need for research funding is greater than ever before.
