Events, Health

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mayo Clinic and the University of North Florida are honoring the occasion by hosting the seventh annual “Upbeat Pink: A Musical Tribute to Breast Cancer Survivorship” concert on Saturday, October 8, at 7:30 p.m. at Lazzara Performance Hall on the UNF campus in Jacksonville. The Upbeat Pink concert is free and open to the public.

The concert features the UNF Wind Symphony, conducted by Dr. Gordon Brock, and the Chorale Ensembles of UNF, conducted by Dr. Cara Tasher. Special guests include two 2011 Florida Times-Union EVE Award recipients -- Dr. Edith Perez, an internationally recognized breast cancer specialist and researcher at Mayo Clinic in Florida and Jeri Millard, a breast cancer survivor and owner of In the Pink, a non-profit boutique and salon for women living with cancer located in Jacksonville Beach. The theme for this year’s program is “A Night in Vegas” featuring popular songs by many well known Las Vegas headline performers.

An Upbeat Pink musical tribute celebrates breast cancer awareness month and is a prelude to the fifth annual “26.2 with Donna: The National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer” scheduled for Feb. 12, 2012 in Jacksonville Beach. It is the first marathon devoted exclusively to raising funds for breast cancer research. The Donna Foundation will again donate a majority of the proceeds from the marathon to the Mayo Clinic to fund ongoing breast cancer research programs.
