Beaches Museum & History Center Honors Founder, April 30th

The Beaches Museum & History Center will honor its founder Jean Haden McCormick for her 90th Birthday Celebration on April 30, 2011. This birthday celebration will revive an old southern tradition called “A Silver Tea Party.” The Beaches Museum & History Center is owned and operated by the Beaches Area Historical Society, founded by Jean Haden McCormick in 1978. After years of tireless work and development the Beaches Museum & History Center opened its doors in March 2006.

The Beaches Area Historical Society carefully documented the history of the six beach communities. These communities are today known as Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Palm Valley and Ponte Vedra Beach. With colorful and surprising stories of long time beach residents and accurate information, the Beaches Museum & History Center has become the only historical archives on the beach today. The archives consist of over 20,000 old photographs and information dating back to the 1600’s. On display at the museum is a permanent exhibit of the history of the beach communities and revolving exhibits of many well known artists.

Many other exhibits are on display throughout the year and school groups of all ages visit and learn the history of the beaches.

Jean McCormick and only a handful of people started what has now grown into three city block area, with the oldest post office, the original depot station, the original foreman’s house, a 28 ton 1911 steam locomotive engine and of course the Beaches Museum & History Center. Please join us to honor this great woman on April 30, 2011 from 3 to 5 PM at the Beaches Museum & History Center. The Founders Book will welcome your signature, card, special memory or photograph and A Silver Bowl will receive Donations in Jean’s honor. Music will be provided by the famous Gene Nordan and A LA Carte will cater the event.
