Police: 2 arrested in armed robbery

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- Police have arrested two men they say are responsible for an armed robbery in Jacksonville Beach in the early morning hours of July 29.

Joshua Charles Johnson and Thomas Fryer were arrested in connection with the crime. Johnson was arrested first and Fryer was arrested Wednesday afternoon.

Around 12:40 a.m. on July 29, two women were walking along 7th Avenue in Jacksonville Beach, according to a news release from Jacksonville Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Sergeant Tom Bingham.

Bingham said while the two were walking, a light colored Cadillac drove by them and then made a u-turn. When the Cadillac came back, a man got out of the back passenger side.

The man, who concealed his face with a piece of cloth, then pointed a handgun at the women and demanded they give him their belongings.

The two women gave the man their wallets and cell phones and then he got back into the Cadillac and fled the area, Bingham said.

Police were able to track one of the women's cell phones to a home on Dubois Drive located on Jacksonville's Westside.

Deputies with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office assisted detectives from JBPD with the investigation. Law enforcement officers were able to identify the resident of the home, Johnson, as the gunman in the robbery.

Bingham said when detectives questioned Johnson, he provided them with a full confession. Johnson was placed under arrest and transported to the Duval County Pretrial Detention Facility where he is being held on two counts of armed robbery. He is not eligible to receive bond.

Based on their investigation, detectives were also able to determine the driver of the Cadillac during the armed robbery, Bingham said.

The driver was identified as 35-year-old Fryer, who was arrested Wednesday afternoon. Fryer is a convicted felon and has been arrested about a dozen times with charges including violent crimes, crimes involving weapons, drug offenses and other felonies, according to the release.
