About Us
Wing Chun is a traditional Chinese fighting art. It is direct, uses economy of movement, and is very comprehensive. We feel the laws of physics determine the best ways to move and defend one’s self. These concepts and principles govern how we move, fight and train. Most other martial arts schools rely on muscular strength, speed, and purely physical technique. Instead, the concepts we use involve position, sensitivity, structure, footwork, and technique to deal with aggressors.
The art is highly efficient and aggressive, yet we train to acquire effortless combat skills. The human’s most basic and natural instinct is self-preservation. When we are children in the developmental stages, these basic instincts come more naturally to us, however over time we become civilized and need to, as adults, be trained to use our once natural instinct of self-preservation. At Atlantic Warriors our mission is to train in the science of self-preservation.
The students of Atlantic Warriors seek to continually develop and evolve their understanding of Wing Chun principles and concepts, and don’t settle for simply carrying on the art in a sacred, or dead tradition. At the same time, we value and honor the Wing Chun pioneers such as, Leung Jan, Chan Wah Shun, Leung Bik, Ip Man, and Leung Sheung. This thinking person’s approach to martial study trains self-preservation skills, not skills for tournaments, competition, or egotistical brawls. Intelligence, awareness, and hard work are essential aspects of Wing Chun training. Come experience the difference at Atlantic Warriors Wing Chun Kung Fu in Jacksonville, Florida.

Nine years ago, after much study, trial, training, and necessity, Sifu Jonathan Petree founded Atlantic Warriors Wing Chun Gung Fu in Jacksonville, Florida. His mission is to teach Wing Chun as a science of self-preservation by removing the student’s training from the comfortable, air-conditioned, lackadaisical school atmosphere that has infected some martial arts schools, and to instead train the student in all environments in which he could be assaulted. In addition, Jonathan prefers to take a “one student at-a-time” approach to training. Simply put, students learn, comprehend and advance much better when the student is receiving energy directly from his instructor. As such, even in public group classes, students receive individual attention from Sifu Petree.
It is unfortunate that some students in large, public classes get left behind because they learn differently from other students in the class. Jonathan believes it is incumbent upon the instructor to clearly see the students learning style, which will help with easier comprehension of the curriculum.
Because of his tireless pursuit of excellence, and effective training methods, 7 students lives have been saved in 2010 from violent, random attacks. What's more, all seven students had less than 2 years of training with Atlantic Warriors at the time of them being attacked. As a result, Atlantic Warriors has been inducted into the Hall of Recognition, and been awarded the Community Enrichment Award by the GNPRBFI. Additionally, in 2010 Sifu Petree was voted Self-Defense Instructor of the Year for Women's Self-Defense.
With over 17 years of Wing Chun training, Sifu Jonathan Petree is the most tenured and senior Wing Chun student of sifu Bill Graves in the state of Florida. Sifu's Petree and Graves have been training together since the early 1990's. Before sifu Bill Graves stopped teaching publicly, Jonathan was his head student and assistant instructor (siHing) in all classes, including public and private lessons. Since then, Jonathan has become a full instructor, and beyond, reaching the height of 9th level “Man of Arrival.”
Other than Wing Chun, Jonathan holds rank in several martial arts including: Hawaiian Jujitsu, Okinawan Karate, Kenpo Karate, Chinese Boxing and Tae Kwon Do. He also enjoys workouts in western boxing, and Gracie Jujitsu. Although he respects all of these arts, it is Wing Chun that he loves. Why? Because it is Wing Chun that has saved his life, more than once.
